When should you install pressure-reducing valves?

For any fire outbreak to be doused, water needs to be put at a necessary pressure. For example, it takes around 5 psi to push water up to a 10-foot riser, which means to get water from the ground floor to the roof the fire pump must deliver 125 psi for a 25-storey building. It may seem doable, however, the minimum water pressure coming out of a standpipe outlet is around 100psi and by the time it reached the 25th floor the pressure would increase to 225 psi. This is where pressure-reducing valves come into play. You can have several valves installed on the lower floors of a high-rise building to keep the water pressure below 175 psi while maintaining at least 100 psi for sand pipes and sprinkler heads on the upper floors.   • Grooved pressure-reducing valves: These valves can be installed in commercial or industrial fire-sprinkler systems to automatically reduce higher inlet pressure to adjustable lower outlet pressure. This diaphragm-actuated, pilot-operated valve is sensitive to downstream flow and pressure fluctuations.

  • Threaded pressure-reducing valves: Threaded pressure-reducing valves are placed at the entrance of residences or buildings and can reduce the water pressure by 42-56 psi for residences.

Maintaining pressure-reducing valves

As with all mechanical devices, pressure-reducing valves also need to be properly inspected, maintained and tested to make sure they function as intended. There are several intended uses of these valves and some example steps to verify that they are functioning effectively are mentioned below:

  • Quarterly inspections should be carried out to ensure inlet and outlet pressures are indicated as intended. Also to check, if the valves are in the correct open or closed position, handwheels are in place and hose threads are in good condition.

  • Thorough partial flow testing should be carried out annually to move the valve seat from the closed position.

  • A full flow test of each valve should be conducted every five years.
